The Historical Postcard
1900 History
It’s the carefree, prosperous year of 1924 and the quaint Midway City of Melbourne boasts the grand opening of the three story, lavish Melbourne Hotel.

Stylishly dressed ladies and gents had developer Elton Hall to thank for enabling them to overlook the Indian River while sipping tea and sunbathing on the Melbourne hotel’s rooftop garden.

This landmark hotel has gone through many changes in the past 60 years, including adding a taxi dispatch station, the Manhattan bar, a corner drug store, a florist and a barber shop during the 50’s. The Van Croix Theatre was added next to the property as well, but later razed for further renovations. During the 70’s Melbourne Bank and Trust/Flagship bank bought the building and renovated the first and second floors for professional offices.

In 1984, the Harry and Wendy Brandon bought and renamed it “ The 1900 Building” in reflection of the historic era the building was built and it’s address. They renovated the entire third floor which was not used for decades, reinstalled windows and refurbished the first and second floors. New awning, landscaping and parking were added to give a prestigious look. November 8, 1985 a grand opening of the Down Town Office Center was celebrated. A time capsule filled with informative publications and trends of the era was buried in the west courtyard. This capsule is to be opened on November 8, 2045.
